The Math on Guus

Posted by Jason Davis On November - 19th - 2009

I'd like to present an equation, with the solution to be determined as we move along through this little discussion; if you'd like to guess what the answer might be, be my guest. I'm willing to bet that more than a few of you already know where we're headed. Poor US performance in European friendlies + Russia's failing to qualify for the World Cup = ?

The American Lost November

Posted by Jason Davis On November - 19th - 2009

The US National wrapped up their European sojourn yesterday with a disappointing 3-1 loss to Denmark in Aarhus. After losing to Slovakia 1-0 on Saturday, the Americans head back to their clubs or off-seasons 0-2 in November friendlies, with only one goal scored in 180 minutes of play.

A Different Dynamo

Posted by Jason Davis On November - 18th - 2009

The off-season has only just begun for the Houston Dynamo, and already there are reports the team could look significantly different next year. Two of Houston's more prominent players and freshly minted US National Team regulars are reportedly headed out.

Garber on Expansion

Posted by Jason Davis On November - 17th - 2009

Via telephone conference call yesterday, MLS Commissioner Don Garber gave his annual "State of the League Address" in which he covered all manner of issues related to Major League Soccer and took questions from some of North America's most prominent soccer journalists. Some of what The Don said was worth comment, and some of it was typical Commish-speak; following is the important bits related to expansion, with my thoughts where applicable. Subsequent posts should be forthcoming addressing Garber's statements on other issues (parity, CCL, stadiums).

Why Did Brown Bring Jozy to Hull?

Posted by Jason Davis On November - 16th - 2009

A friend of mine sent me an email yesterday, consisting of a simple question: Was the Jozy Altidore signing simply a Phil Brown PR move? He had the crowd cheering USA! USA! in his first game and hardly anything since. My initial reaction to the question, before I attempted to intelligently respond to his suggestion, was "Huh. I hadn't thought of that."

Paulson Talks Tough in Portland

General view of Ghana v Australia

Courtesy of OregonLive through WVHooligan comes an update on the Portland MLS efforts: Timbers owner Merritt Paulson is talking tough about a potential stadium deal with the city of Beaverton for his minor league baseball team, claiming the MLS will not be coming to Portland with out the ballpark deal.

It certainly sounds like posturing from Paulson, especially as the Portland City Council were surprised to hear of his position. For his part, Paulson maintains that he has been consistent in saying that joining MLS is contingent upon his ability to find a new home for the Beavers baseball team.

After the two projects, the renovations of PGE Park for the Timbers and a new baseball stadium for the Beavers, were split by Portland leaders, soccer fans were likely under the assumption that things were settled. But delays have plagued agreements between Paulson and the city, and this recent lashing out in regards to the baseball teams throw a wrench in the process. Whether or not Paulson is tough-talking without any real intention of backing out of MLS is unclear.

For their part, MLS isn't giving any indication that they're worried. Dan Courtemanche's statement to OregonLive makes no reference to the ongoing stadium squabbles, instead indicating that the league is in regular contact with Paulson and looks forward to the debut of the MLS Timbers in two years time.

Portland, as potentially wonderful a Major League Soccer market as it might be, continues to be a thorn in the side of the league. If Paulson is in fact posturing, he might be playing with fire. In the meantime, soccer fans not in Portland yet excited to see the city join the league, are wondering what exactly is going on.

Paulson "clarified" his statements to Portland officials, perhaps caught in an embarrassing situation after his comments to Beaverton city leaders.

If you have insight as to what exactly is going on with Portland, or if you would like to share your comments on the ongoing struggles to get renovation work started there, do so below.
